The written game story has evolved considerably from its first appearances
in print during the late 1800s to today’s online offerings. Your task is to
locate a classic game story (defined has having occurred prior to 1990) and
compare it with a contemporary version for the same team (and if possible,
the same publication).
For example, after some research you might locate a game story about
Colorado State’s football team written in the Collegian, Denver Post, Rocky
Mountain News (or any other publication you can search) and recounts a
victory from the 1915 undefeated season. Read that story and then compare
it to a game story produced sometime this season (again, ideally from the
same publication).
Consider the following in your response:
1) Explain the significant differences between the two types of writing — the
words used, the descriptions (or lack of) relating to the game, use of other
components to illustrate the outcome (visuals, graphics, video), etc. In short,
what stands out between the two stories.
2) Note the differences and similarities between the numbers used in both
stories. What type of numbers were used and how frequently?
3) Describe how the author integrates players (or not) into the game story.
Consider direct quotes, descriptions of plays, etc.
