I want to write about how social media negatively affects mental health. To be even more specific I am going to focus on Instagram and young girls. Instagram is a social media platform used by the majority of teens, adults, etc. The thing about Instagram is that people post only what they want you to see. A luxurious lifestyle you see from your favorite influencer is not always what it seems, for example, you can post a picture of yourself at Nobu but it doesn’t mean that you spent 500 dollars on dinner, or you can post a picture with a Louis Vuitton bag but it’s fake. What I am trying to get at is that most of what you see online is not real, including pictures of people. Photoshop and face tune are used probably too much on social media. When you post a picture to the word its of you looking your best, so even behind all of the makeup and not eating before that picture to look skinny and beautiful there are even people who photoshop more makeup onto their face and make their tummy look smaller and make their butt look bigger. These pictures are nothing close to reality but for young teenage girls who dont even know their self-identity and place in this world, it can affect them a lot. A 12-year-olds body looks nothing close to a 20-year-old supermodels body that has been photoshopped to perfection implementing no flaws. This is not good for their mental health because it makes them feel no good enough or pretty enough in their own body. Young teens should be playing and having fun not worrying why they dont have boobs yet or starving themselves to be skinny like the picture of the pretty girl they saw on Instagram. This is the gateway to horrible mental health that can turn into body dysmorphia and eating disorders.
