This week you will begin to write your first literary analysis essay. Keep in mind that a literary analysis essay is not a rhetorical analysis, nor is it just a summary of the plot or a book review. Before beginning a literary analysis essay, its essential to carefully read the text and come up with a thesis statement to keep your essay focused. As you write, follow the standard structure of an academic essay:
An introduction that tells the reader what your essay will focus on.
A main body, divided into paragraphs, that builds an argument using evidence from the text.
A conclusion that clearly states the main point that you have shown with your analysis.

For this essay, you will read the following prompts and choose one. You will then come up with a specific argument which you will develop in 3-4 pages. The Devil’s Highway is the story of the U.S.-Mexico border, but it is also about many other invisible borders. Aside from the physical border itself, what other borders separate the people in this story?
The theme of survival may be evident when considering the walkers, but how does it also apply to the Border Patrol and the smugglers themselves? How are they also attempting to navigate the specific geo-political circumstances described in the novel?
There seems to be a theme of occult and spiritual forces behind the scenes in the Arizona desert. Are these references offered symbolically, or are these presences an actual reality?
