Find a story in the news from the past few weeks about cybercrime/cybersecurity incident, or from a criminal or civil case. Briefly describe the issue as the news reported it and why this example is defined as cybercrime/cybersecurity. What advice would you offer to the relevant leaders and policy- makers in regards to the issue?
During the height of summer tourism in Nottingham city, a large bus operator was hit by a cyber attack. Despite this being an active investigation, some details regarding the attack have come to light. The operating company shared that it still had no access to their email server or systems their buses rely on. Based upon given facts, I believe that this attack was either a malware based attack or a continued DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. However, given that law enforcement and one cyber security firm are assisting in the recovery, I doubt this is a DDoS attack. Bringing down a bus operator’s computer system and email server is clearly a cybercrime. The company has already made the right first few steps in contacting law-enforcement and a cyber security firm. Additionally, cyber security experts advised the bus company to shut down most of their cyber systems to prevent further damage. Once either law-enforcement or the firm determines the type of attack and scope of the attack, remediations can begin immediately. Depending on the type of attack a plethora of corrections can be made. Most likely, the attackers exploited a common vulnerability in the companys computer network. I would advise for routine auditing and penetration testing of the companys computer networks. It is always better to be proactive than reactive when it comes to cyber security.
