Contribute to the Humans of the City ‘blog’ were putting together as a class in this discussion thread. Write a post based off the interview that you conducted with one person who lives in a city, and approach your post with the Humans of New York blog in mind. (In case you need a reminder, the interview assignment description is posted below.)
Elements to include in your Humans of the City blog post:
- A photograph or image. Include a portrait or profile pic of your interviewee if they agree to having their image posted on our class blog. (This ‘blog’ is only viewable to students enrolled in our course while our course is running; the photo will not be or become ‘searchable’ to the broader public.) If your interviewee prefers not to share a photograph of themselves, be understanding and select an image that you think conveys something important about your interviewee.
- A direct quote. Post 200-400 words from your interview.
- Your reflection on this exercise (300-500 words). What did this experience make you think about or question? What did you learn from interviewing someone and translating that interview into a ‘blog’ post? What do you think about using a blog as a medium to tell stories about the people who live in a city? What questions does this exercise raise for you about how to represent a city and the communities and people that live in it? (Keep in mind that you might also find it helpful to look over any notes you made while viewing the Humans of New York photoblog.)
Potential Questions for Your Interview
- Describe how you came to live in the city and what brought you here.
- How do you move around the city?
- What kind/s of transportation do you use, and how do you think this impacts your relationship to your city and the other people who live in it?
- How do you imagine your city as same/different from other cities in the country? In the world?
- What do you think has changed about your city since you got here? What hasn’t changed?
- What kinds of experiences have you had that you think have impacted the way you see your city?
