Read Herbert I. Schiller, Mass Communications and American Empire. 1971. Chapters 7 & 8, pp. 93–
125.
In 150-250 words:
1. Summarize Schiller’s main take away point.
2. Provide an example from the reading.
3. Reflect on the readings. Do you think what Schiller describes constitutes imperialism? Why or why not?
Example of a response from A GRADE Political economists would analyze the implication of globalization behind the leading movie roles. The Rock is a well-known former wrestling star who transited his career path into Hollywood, and Jackie Chan is a famous martial artist who is the few accepted by the Western world. Jennifer Lawrance symbolizes elegance and brings forth the feminism/heroine concept in contrast to the weak female image. The protagonists yield a high acceptance worldwide given their neutrality in political stand and the incorporation of the Oriental culture. The hybrid cultural contexts between the West and the East dilute the traditional Hollywood stereotypes against the minorities and broaden the definition of heroic images.
Besides examining the main characters, political economists would be interested in the plots and the locations of productions. Since communication and culture are always competing, the capitalist economy and modern imperialism impose severe threats to other emerging movies industries outsides the United States. The production sites would include international locations in Asia or based in Asia to meditate the hostility presented in the foreign industries. Using Asian actors and shooting outside the United States would defuse the existing social and political resistance against Western cultural imperialism.
Last but not least to analyze is the plot and the lines spoken. Does the Rock speak Chinese to revert the language predominance? How do the typical Western characters interact with Jackie Chan? Since political economy concerns most social relations and structures, the movie would only be successful if the US box office and the foreign box office showed significant successes.
