This week we wrapped up the book The Resilient Sector. One of the big themes/questions throughout this book with whether the nonprofit sector should embrace the move towards more commercialization and market-driven operations (e.g., more social enterprise, more professionalism, more fee-driven services, etc.)…OR…whether people in the nonprofit sector should seek a renewal of the spirit and distinctiveness of nonprofit work (rethinking the nonprofit sectors role and operations in light of contemporary realities…seeking a new consensus regarding the functions of these organizations, the relationships they have with citizens, with government, and with business).
What do you think about this? How do you think the nonprofit sector should approach the future in response to the themes/questions described above? And don’t just say “it depends” or “a little of both”…take a position and make an argument (acknowledging that of course there are important exceptions and qualifications to consider).
