Current Migration Issue Post
Students will perform a rhetorical analysis on current articles from mainstream news publications to investigate a single topic related to migration. The purpose of this assignment is twofold: to deepen our understanding of current issues creating and affecting communities of migrants, and to exercise our ability to discern the perspective of the sources to which you turn for information.
Choosing a topic: Before you start reading articles, cast a wide net. Take a wide look at mainstream news sources for issues that matter to you. Consider events and policy changes outside of the US, and economic and political crises that may be contributing to the movement of large groups of people. (Work opportunities and incentive programs, food scarcity, religious persecution, conflicts between ethnic groups, etc.) Try to think creatively about issues that may be creating and affecting communities of migrants anywhere in the world. I also encourage you to bring issues to our attention that are not widely reported on.
Selecting articles: Once you choose a topic that you find interesting, start reading on it from a wide variety of publications. I recommend skimming 5 or more articles to get a general sense of how the issue is covered. Sometimes a single publication will report on an issue several times – it may be worth taking a glance at search results within individual publications to get a sense of how they’ve covered this issue over time.
Students will analyze and evaluate three articles from mainstream news publications to investigate a single topic related to migration. The post should discuss the articles rhetorical approaches and interpret the writers tone. Conclude by offering your evaluation of the articles coverage of the issue. The purpose of this assignment is twofold: to deepen our understanding about global and domestic events relevant to the topic of the class, and to exercise our ability to discern the perspective of the sources to which you turn for information. Be sure to cite your sources using MLA format at the end of your post.
Articles should be no more than 6 months old.
Rhetorical analysis: After finding at least three sources that offer diverse perspectives on the issue, write a response that (very) briefly summarizes the articles and synthesizes your findings. The main purpose of the post is to discuss the articles individual rhetorical approaches and interpret the articles attitudes on the topic. Read for tone, persuasion, evidence, values, focus, political bent, etc. Question how the articles are written, not simply what is written. Journalists make many choices about how to represent a story. Take this opportunity to describe the effect of their choices in these posts. Finally, in 1-2 sentences conclude your post by considering what you learned about the sources you consulted.
