The Holocaust can be studied from many different angles, perspectives or “lenses” as we say in the world of academia. This does not apply to how we study the Holocaust but also the way that gender factors into those scholars writing and researching on different topics involving the Holocaust. Dr. Deborah Lipstadt of Emory University is an excellent “case study” in how the role of gender can play out in Holocaust scholarship. Dr. Deborah Lipstadt is a pioneer and expert in “Holocaust denial” and has devoted her career towards “de-bunking” Holocaust deniers. She is also a proud Jewish woman. In 2016, the movie Denial was released, based on the true story of Dr. Lipstadt’s groundbreaking court case in which she (her publisher) was sued by a prominent published Holocaust denier. She was then tasked with, esstentially, defending the truth of the Holocaust in a British court.
