This semester we have talked about different qualitative methods that researchers will at times use. This assignment requires you to go out in the field and observe behavior. Go to a social setting of your choosing such as a park, mall, or library, and observe behavior for at least 45 minutes. Pick something interesting to observe.
You must take notes while you observe. This can include descriptions of conversations, behaviors, as well as other relevant information such as aspects of the environment that may be important. Type your notes (I do not expect you to write in full sentences or use proper grammar and punctuation during the observation. However, when you turn these notes into field notes, I expect it to be cleaned up. Consider typing them as bullet points). While observing, your notes must be hand written or typed (no video/audio recordings of those whom you are observing). After your field observation is complete, you will need to record your general reaction to your experiences as a field observer. Consider how this made you feel and if your reaction was what you had anticipated or if it was different and how so.
