Define and explain correlation. How is it calculated and what does it tell us about data gathered during a research process? How do we use correlation to help answer research questions? How does correlation differ from causation? Provide an example to explain the role of each in criminal justice.

Respond to your classmate’s posts. . Be constructive and professional. 100 words each post.

1)Correlation is defined as a mutual relationship or connection of two or more things. To be explain correlation, I would explain as two or more things that are alike or similar listed in the same category. Correlation is calculated by first determining the covariance of the variables and then dividing that quantity by the product of those variable’s standard deviations. Correlation is used in research to determine the relationship between two variables without the researcher having to control the variables. This basically means letting the two variable have a natural relationship without having to force them together. Causation is defined as the relationship between cause and effect. The difference between the two would be that causation, something has to happen in order for the cause and effect to occur and for correlation nothing is being forced to make something happen, it just flows. Causation in criminal justice would be an individual starts an argument and hit someones and then that person turns around and hits them back in self defense. Correlation in criminal justice would be the like crimes that happen or like gangs who happen to go and do things that are against the law or that another gang would do.

2)The definition of correlation is a mutual relationship or connection between two or more things. Correlation is calculated first determining the covariance of the variables and then dividing that quantity by the product of those variables’ standard deviations. A correlation tells us the strength of association between variables, tells us variables are only observed with no manipulation or interventions by others, limited control is used so other variables may play a role in the data collection, and there will be high external validity. While causation and correlation can exist at the same time, correlation does not imply causation. Causation explicitly applies to cases where action A causes outcome B. While correlation is a relationship such as A relates to B and B relates to A but it doesn’t cause the other event to happen. An example of correlation would be height and weight. Taller people tend to be heavier. A negative correlation is a relationship between two variables in which an increase in one variable is associated with a decrease in the other. An example of causation would be This is cause-and-effect because I’m purposefully pushing my body to physical exhaustion when doing exercise. The muscles I used to exercise are exhausted (effect) after I exercise (cause). This cause-and-effect IS confirmed
