Option A: Scientific Methods

Psychology is particularly interesting to many of us because we are fascinated with understanding ourselves and the people around us. Think about the things that you have always wondered about people and why and how they think, feel, and behave the way that they do. Maybe you have questions that you have always wanted to answer about yourself and how or why you think, feel, or act the way that you do.

  • What is a question that you would like to be able to answer about human behavior or mental processes?
  • Having trouble or need some direction? Review the table of contents in your textbook; move through the pages of the textbook and scan the headings, pictures, figures, and infographics; or skim the topics in the subject index (at the end of the text).

The scientific method is a critical foundation of psychological science and psychologists’ ability to generate, share, and apply objective evidence.

  • Please review Infographic 2.1 below or in your textbook. Pay special attention to the example provided.

Now, think of a research question in psychology that interests you. What is a question that you want to know the answer to?

  • In your textbook, revisit the following sections: The Scientific Method, Research Basics, Descriptive and Correlational Methods, and The Experimental Method and their associated keywords (defined in the margins of each page) and examples.
  • Think about how you could use one of the research methods (e.g., case study, survey, experiment) described in your textbook to answer your question.
  • Think about your hypothesis (a testable prediction).
  • Think about the participants in your study and what they would do.

Option A Post

Provide your own example of a study you could conduct to answer your research question using one of the methods from Chapter 2.

In your post, be sure to describe:

  • Your research question
  • Why your question is important
  • Hypothesis
  • Study participants
  • Include a brief overview of the steps to complete your study
