In preparation for the Scholar Practitioner Project (SPP), you must select a topic and public health issue in which you have interest or experience. Your topic can relate to an international issue or a U.S.-only policy. Include your specific intervention for this issue. Do not choose a huge issue but, instead, try to narrow the issue to a specific topic and intervention within the larger issue. For example, if you select infant mortality as your topic, you might narrow the breadth of this topic by examining how infant mortality is impacted by a public health issue such as maternal diabetes, prenatal care, or low birth weight.
When selecting a public health issue, keep in mind that you will describe the issue in terms of each of the PEEEL (Politics, Epidemiology, Ethics, Economics, and Law) disciplines. So, you will want to read PEEELing Away the Issues: An Executive Summary carefully (provided in Required Readings). Also consider that, unlike a research project, your goal will be to advocate for a specific policy or intervention that will impact your issue.
When considering the intervention for which you will advocate, you may wish to consult The Community Guide database. The Community Guide is a collection of all the evidence-based findings of the Community Preventive Services Task Force. It can help you make decisions by providing information on community preventive services, programs, and policies that have been shown to work, and how they may fit the needs of your community. For example, The Community Guide describes several interventions for tobacco control. Among these, Interventions to Increase the Unit Price for Tobacco Products is classified as recommended with strong evidence. In contrast, Internet Based Cessation Interventions is described as having insufficient evidence to recommend.

- Explain why you have selected the topic and public health issue.
- Support your response with scientific evidence.
